Solving Simplified Equations Using Order of Operations

Objective: Introduce solving simplified equations using order of operations.
Materials: Chalkboard/White board and chalk/markers
Players: 2 or more

Rules:

  1. Objective of the game is to identify how to solve equations with different operations using the order of operations.
  2. When given equations having different operations tell which operation is first and solve the equation.
  3. First to raise their hand is able to answer. Once called upon the party has 45 seconds to answer.
  4. Each correct answer gets a square. If half of the answer is incorrect the other person is given an opportunity to answer and steal the square.
  5. First to get three in a row wins.

Adaptations:

  1. Only require the solution to the equation to wins the square.
  2. Do not offer a chance to steal the square
  3. Complete game using two groups and allow the group to work together to answer the question. Each person in the group must answer at least once and make the game best of 3.

Collaborate with us to make this game even better. If you have used this math game before please comment below letting everyone know how it went and any recommendations or adaptations you would do or make to the game to help others play the game more effectively.

Some Questions to get the collaborating going:

  • What age group is this best for or how could it be adapted for a different age?
  • Could you help make it even more clear (so a child/student could understand it)?
  • How can it be adapted to teach a different math skill?

Please comment and add anything to this post that you think would benefit others.
