Combining literacy and math is important for all ages. A good mathematician needs to be able to read well to solve word problems and to know how to find the clues in words.

An activity that reinforces this is MATHEMATICS AUTOBIOGRAPHIES. Have students write down all their thoughts about math. This can be games they’ve played, how they feel about math, if they believe they are good mathematicians and why, and the toys they played with as a young child that involve math.

This allows you as the teacher to get to know your students a little better. Whether they love math or hate math, at least you have a starting point with this activity.

This is a great activity to start your students’ math journals at the beginning of the year.
